Thanks to the remarkable set of ruins it preserves, it occupies a prominent place in the framework of the country's archaeological stations. It stands on the site where there was once a city of Roman foundation, the capital of Civitas Igaeditanorum (1st century BC), later an episcopal see under Swabian and Visigothic rule. Occupied by the Muslims in the 8th century, it was reconquered by the Christians in the 12th century. Donated to the Order of the Temple in the 13th century, it preserves vestiges from different periods that show the permanence of different civilisations.
