Perched on a hill that imposes itself on most of the horizons, the village of Monsanto has a singular charm, to which the two titles awarded in the 20th century - Most Portuguese Village of Portugal, in 1938, and Historic Village, in 1995, contribute. A tourist icon of the region, Monsanto is a unique experience for visitors. It was granted a charter by the kings Alfonso Enríquez, Sancho I, Sancho II and Manuel I. The oldest part is at the highest point, where the Templars built a fence with a keep.
