To visit Trancoso is to relive the history of Portugal. The stillness that can now be felt in its millenary castle contrasts with the shocks and fears experienced by the people of yesteryear. It was a frontier land, the scene of various struggles and battles that were decisive for the formation and independence of the kingdom. Pampered by kings, it obtained important privileges. Alfonso Enriquez granted it the charter of Foral and Alfonso III the charter of Feria. King Dinis ordered the construction of the walls that still protect a village in which Christians and Jews lived side by side.
